Custom Shutter Options and Upgrades: How Rockwood Helps You Design the Perfect Shutter
Custom shutters are more than a window covering. They are a design feature, a functional upgrade, and a long-term investment in your home. At Rockwood Shutters, every detail matters — from the finish and hinge color to the louver size, tilt system, and hardware.
That is why we offer a wide range of shutter options and upgrades designed to help homeowners create a finished product that looks beautiful, works smoothly, and fits the way each room is used.
Beautiful Finishes Built for Long-Term Quality
A great finish is one of the clearest signs of a quality shutter. At Rockwood, our finishes are designed to look beautiful and perform over time.
We use water-based paints and stains that are environmentally friendly and contain no volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. Our finishes also include UV inhibitors to help protect against discoloration and fading caused by sunlight.
Because our shutters are manufactured in Houston, Texas, our paint and stain formulations were created specifically to complement our Texas manufacturing environment. That attention to detail helps us deliver a smooth, consistent, durable finish.
Paint Options for a Clean, Timeless Look
Rockwood offers a curated selection of paint colors, including popular whites and neutrals designed to work with a wide range of home styles. Paint options include standard and enhanced selections such as Extra White, Soft White, Ivory, Biscuit, Latte, Champagne, Casablanca, Silver Moon, and Rain Cloud.
For homeowners looking for a more personalized finish, custom paint matching is available on Premiere Wood, Premiere Ultra, and LiteLine shutters. This allows customers to coordinate shutters with their existing trim, cabinetry, walls, or design palette.
The custom paint process includes collecting a paint sample, matching the color, creating a strike-off sample, and receiving customer approval before the job moves into production. This extra step helps ensure the final product matches the customer’s expectations before manufacturing begins.
Stain Options That Highlight the Beauty of Real Wood
For customers who love the warmth and character of natural wood, Rockwood offers a broad selection of stain finishes. These stains are available for LiteLine and Premiere Hardwood shutters and are designed to bring out the natural beauty of the wood grain.
Rockwood’s stain palette includes classic tones such as Natural, Cashew, Caramel, Cognac, Sedona, Toffee, Saddle, Bark, Mocha, Hickory, Truffle, Raven, and more.
For a more distinctive design statement, Rockwood also offers Artistic Stains, including colors such as Indigo, Santorini, Amalfi, Daylily, Blue Jay, Sage, Farmhouse, and Jade. These finishes give homeowners a way to add personality while still enjoying the craftsmanship and quality of a real wood shutter.
Duo Finish for a Custom Designer Look
For Premiere Hardwood shutters, Rockwood offers a Duo Finish option. This allows customers to combine two paints, two stains, or a paint and stain combination for a more customized look.
With Duo Finish, only the louvers change color, creating a subtle contrast that can highlight the shutter design and coordinate with the rest of the room. This option is available in arches, specialty shapes, and doors, making it a great choice for homeowners who want something unique and elevated.
Hinge Options That Complete the Design
Hardware may seem like a small detail, but the right hinge finish can make a big difference in the final look of a shutter.
Rockwood offers multiple hinge options depending on the shutter product. LiteLine uses lift-away hinges, which are designed for easy installation and removal of shutter panels. Bright Brass is included, while upgraded colors such as Antique Brass, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Black Iron, Shiny Nickel, Stainless, Rose Gold, Copper, Extra White, Soft White, and Ivory may be available as upgrades.
Premiere Hardwood, Premiere Ultra, and Poly shutters use three-barrel hinges. These are available in finishes such as Brass, Antique Brass, Shiny Nickel, Stainless Steel, Extra White, Soft White, Oil-Rubbed Bronze, Biscuit, Ivory, and Black Iron.
By offering multiple hinge finishes, Rockwood gives homeowners the ability to coordinate shutters with door hardware, lighting, cabinet pulls, plumbing fixtures, and other design elements throughout the home.
Recessed Magnets for a Cleaner Look
Rockwood shutters include thoughtful details that improve both appearance and function. One example is our recessed shutter magnets.
These magnets are routed into the shutter, giving them a cleaner and less visible appearance compared to bulkier hardware. They are also less noticeable from outside the window, which helps preserve the clean, finished look of the shutter.
Decorative Knobs for Added Style and Function
Knobs are available for all Rockwood shutter products and can be placed based on the customer’s preference. Standard locations include divider rail height centered on the panel or divider rail height centered on the stile opposite the hinges.
Customers can choose from several styles, including Square, Round, Slim, Lucite Square, Lucite Octagon, and Hanging Loop. Finishes include gold, silver, bronze, and black.
These small details allow homeowners to add a decorative touch while also making shutters easier to open and close.
Louver Sizes for Every Style and View Preference
Louver size has a major impact on the look and feel of a shutter. Rockwood offers 2 ½”, 3 ½”, and 4 ½” louvers on Premiere, Premiere Ultra, Poly, and LiteLine shutters.
The 2 ½” louver provides a more traditional look and minimizes the view through the shutter.
The 3 ½” louver is the most popular choice because it offers a balanced look and a great view.
The 4 ½” louver creates a more modern appearance and maximizes the view, making it a strong option for homeowners who want a clean, open feel.
Choosing the right louver size depends on the room, the window, and the customer’s style preference.
Divider Rails and Double Hung Options for Better Light Control
Divider rails provide stability and allow the top and bottom louvers of a shutter panel to operate separately. This gives homeowners more control over privacy and natural light. Divider rails are available on all products and may be required depending on the height of the window.
Double hung shutters divide the shutter into top and bottom sections that open and close independently. While this option can be useful in certain situations, Rockwood typically recommends using divider rails when possible because double hung configurations can reduce light and view and may interfere with tilt-in windows.
The goal is always to choose the option that gives the customer the best combination of function, appearance, and access.
Classic Tilt Rods for a Traditional Look
The Classic Tilt Rod is the standard tilt option and gives shutters a timeless, traditional appearance. The tilt rod is attached to the center of the louvers on the front of each shutter panel.
Rockwood uses stainless steel staples rather than plastic components. These staples are machined with epoxy to help create a tight, reliable connection. This is an important quality difference because stainless steel components are more durable and easier to repair than plastic mechanisms.
ClearLine Rear Tilt for a Modern, Open View
ClearLine is one of Rockwood’s most popular upgrades. This rear tilt system removes the visual “stick” from the front of the shutter, creating a cleaner, more modern look and maximizing the view through the louvers.
Rockwood’s ClearLine system uses a laser-cut steel strip that is hand-screwed onto the side of every louver on every panel. It is made from stainless steel, not plastic, giving it a high-quality feel and long-term durability.
ClearLine is available on Poly and Premiere shutters. It is not available on LiteLine.
Cut ClearLine for Flexible Light Control
For customers who want the functionality of a divider rail without the look of a divider rail, Cut ClearLine is a smart option. This upgrade allows the customer to choose where the ClearLine strip is cut, giving them separate light control without adding a visible horizontal rail across the shutter.
This is especially useful for homeowners who want a cleaner design while still having practical control over privacy and light.
